United States Literary Agents Rejecting Non-U.S. Authors

Q: Why is it that once a western agent finds out that a writer of a query is from Africa they reject him/her? -Romanus

A:
I think part of the problem is that it may be difficult to promote/contact/market authors in other countries – it’s just a harder uphill battle. It may make sense to try focusing on publishing venues closer to home. I know Africa’s publishing situation is a bit chaotic, so I don’t have any specific recommendations, I’m afraid, but I know there was a very good seminar at the London Book Fair in March 2004 about Africa’s publishing situation – you might try looking online and seeing if the speakers putting on the presentation have other suggestions.
